Is Packaged Fruit Juice Healthy? Juice vs Whole Fruit
October 30, 2026 · 4 min read
A glass of juice looks like fruit, but it behaves more like a sweet drink. The label name tells you a lot.
Know the label names
- “100% juice” or “juice”: only fruit juice, often from concentrate. No added sugar, but plenty of natural sugar.
- “Nectar”: juice plus water and usually added sugar.
- “Fruit drink” or “fruit beverage”: often a small share of juice with water and added sugar.
- “No added sugar”: none added, but fruit sugars are still there.
How much sugar is in a glass
A 200 ml glass of juice typically has around 20 g of sugar, close to a glass of cola. Check the sugars per 100 ml and multiply by two for a glass.
Why whole fruit is better
- Fibre slows how fast sugar reaches your blood.
- It’s more filling, so you eat less overall.
- Chewing takes time; a glass of juice can hold the sugar of three or four fruits.
If you like juice
- Keep it to a small glass, with a meal.
- Choose 100% juice over nectar or fruit drinks.
- Dilute with water for children.
- Try fresh lime water or buttermilk instead.
FAQ
Is fresh juice better than packaged?
Fresh juice may have more vitamin C and no preservatives, but it has the same sugar issue. Whole fruit is still best.
Is juice good for kids?
Small amounts are fine for older children. Whole fruit and water are better everyday choices.
